Införandet av film i museer och konstgallerier är ansvarig för biografens expansion i flera aspekter: i dess arkitektoniska aspekt (rum av olika storlekar, multiplicerade skärmar och konjugerade utrymmen), i den diskursiva aspekten (nya kopplingar mellan bild och språk) och i den mottagliga aspekten (nya roller för besökaren som nu inte längre vet hur man ska gå vidare före en film). Från dessa nya möjligheter som presenteras av filmanordningen etableras en ny åskådarregim. En ny biografåskådare är född: mobil, kapabel till en variabel titt på bildernas organisation, dimension och närvaro. Denna observatör, medveten om sin närvaro i utställningsrummet, är inte längre benägen att lätt identifiera sig med de karaktärer som presenteras av filmen eller att lura sig själv med diegesis skaldiska utrymme.
